Data cluster Citation
In today's scientific environment, data are increasingly recognised as being just as valuable as research outputs as scientific publications or conference presentations. Researchers can therefore gain recognition not only through scientific papers, but also by publishing datasets in repositories. This gives other researchers the opportunity to re-use and refer to them.
If secondary data are used in the study, this should be clearly stated in all results related to the study. Reference to the dataset should be included both in the text of the scientific publication and in its reference list. An increasing number of scientific journals encourage the completion of a data access statement, indicating the origin of the data and the conditions under which other interested parties can access the dataset.
The data availability declaration usually indicates the location of the dataset. This is most often an online repository or data store to which an access link can be provided. However, URL links can change over time, so it is advisable to provide not only the URL link but also the persistent identifier assigned to the dataset (e.g. DOI), as this provides a consistent way of accessing the information collected. In this way, the data can be cited, ensuring sustainable access to the dataset and its discoverability in different search tools.
