Sections of the DPP

The sections included in the DPP may vary depending on institutional or funding requirements, but most data management plans include the information below.
  • What data will be generated and/or used during the study?
    • Describe the source, type, format, expected volume of the data.
  • Are ethics and intellectual property issues sorted?
    • Indicate how the ethical principles will be respected.
  • How will data be organised, stored securely and protected during the project?
    • Describe where the data is stored, the principles of data organisation and the security measures to protect the data.
  • How will the datasets be documented?
    • Specify what metadata will be described, what documentation will be produced, e.g, ReadMe files or codebooks containing variable definitions and descriptions.
  • How will the data be processed?
    • Specify what software is needed to work with the data.
  • How will the data be stored in the long term and under what conditions will it be shared with others?
    • Describe the choice of research data repository or platform, the duration of the dataset, the data access solutions (open access, restricted access, closed data). Include the conditions for use of the data, including the granting of a licence.
  • Who is responsible for the different data management tasks?
    • Describe the roles for working with data – data managers, data users, etc.
  • What budget and resource considerations should be taken into account when implementing the project?
    • Please indicate the costs related to data management – data storage, backup solutions, software and staff costs. Indicate how these costs will be covered.
