On October 10, as part of the PMNET Forum 2025, a seminar “Support for data use in research: governance, stewards, infrastructure” was held at the National Library of Latvia, bringing together Latvian and foreign experts to share their experience on science data management and open science solutions.

The event was opened by Inese Šteina, Chairwoman of the Board of the Higher Education and Science IT Sharing Services Center (VPC), emphasising that open science and data quality are the strategic foundation of the Latvian research digital ecosystem.

The VPC team presented the most current development directions:

  • Iļja Afanasjevs – on the development of science digital infrastructure and the role of VPC in ensuring data accessibility, security and integration;
  • Kaspars Bērziņš – on VPC data steward services, which provide practical support to researchers in data preparation, structuring and publishing on the DataverseLV platform.

Diana Pilvar (University of Tartu / ELIXIR Estonia), Arnis Kokorevičs (Science Council of Latvia), Līga Strūve (Central Statistical Bureau) and Austra Ciša (Latvian Academy of Culture) also gave inspiring and experience-based presentations, sharing their experiences and outlining the main trends and solutions in research data management in Latvia and neighbouring countries.

The event took place within the framework of the project Support for the implementation of open science in practice, as well as creating solutions for research data sharing and participation in the European Open Science Cloud” implemented by the VPC, strengthening the capabilities of Latvian scientific institutions to manage and share data in accordance with the FAIR principles.
