Naming files

It is also important to maintain consistency and order in the names of the different files during the research project, so that they are sufficiently informative and everyone involved in the project can easily navigate and find the files they need.
The recommendations apply to the names of folders, datasets and various other documents.
  • Careful consideration whether names should be in Latvian or English
  • The name must be clear, human readable and also machine readable (automated)
  • The name should not exceed 20-30 characters
  • The name can contain different types of information that help to understand the content of the file and to distinguish between different versions. For example, it can be:
    • Title of project or study
    • Location or coordinates
    • Researcher's name or initials
    • Date or year
    • Version number
  • Do not use spaces; other symbols or characters are recommended instead
    • Footnotes: first_study
    • Hyphens: first-fifth
    • Capital letters without spaces (so-called camel letters): FirstStudy
  • Avoid special characters: \/?: * "> < |: #%" | ^ [] ~ æÆ øØ åÅ äÄ öÖ …`
  • Avoid long and soft characters
  • A consistent approach shall be used to record the date, e.g. YYYY-MM-DD: 2025-01-29
  • Version numbers are consistently produced:
    • v001, v002, v003
    • v01, v02, v03, […] v10
  • The name of the same dataset must be identical in different formats, e.g:
    • datu_analize_2025-01-29.CSV
    • data_analysis_20250129.XLSX
