On June 10, 2025, a meeting was held in the Dutch city of Utrecht between representatives of the Latvian research data repository DataverseLV and the Dutch repository DataverseNL.
DataverseLV was represented by Daina Kosīte, data steward and head of knowledge transfer at the Higher Education and Science IT Shared Services Center (VPC), who introduced DataverseNL’s long-time repository manager Marion Wittenberg from Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS) to what has been accomplished in Latvia so far.
The Dutch research data repository DataverseNL is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. During the meeting, several important aspects related to the creation, development and sustainable maintenance of research data repositories were discussed.
Marion shared the experience gained by DANS in developing DataverseNL as one of the leading research data repositories in the Netherlands. She emphasised that maintaining the repository is a dynamic and continuous process — the infrastructure is regularly improved, and new functionalities are introduced that meet modern research needs and ensure long-term data availability and security. Special attention was paid to issues related to data deposit procedures, collection structure, CoreTrustSeal certification and ensuring the sustainability of the infrastructure.
The importance of international cooperation in research data management was emphasised during the meeting. Participation in international communities and organisations provides an opportunity to follow innovations in the development of infrastructure and tools, share good practices and strengthen the quality of national repositories and compliance with international standards.
Such an exchange of experience is a valuable contribution to the development of Latvian research data management and helps strengthen DataverseLV as a reliable, secure and sustainable data repository that promotes the implementation of open science and FAIR principles in practice.
