Data management plan (DPP)
The Data Management Plan (DMP) describes how the research data will be managed throughout and after the research project. The DMP includes information on how data will be collected, stored, protected and shared. The data management plan summarises details of data formats, version control, security and data submission to the repository, as well as the necessary tools for reuse.
The DPP is an important element that should be developed before the start of the study and should be updated as the study progresses. A well completed DPP contributes to the integrity of the research, as the dataset is understandable not only to the research team working on it, but also to other stakeholders – funders, research support staff, institutional information systems managers, etc.
The requirements for completing the DPP may be laid down in the statutes of the funders and may also be regulated by the research institution's own regulations. It is therefore important to ascertain what the requirements for the DPP are from the institution represented by the researcher and from the funder. Often, funders and research institutions provide templates for the DPP which already cover the main aspects of data management, so that researchers have a better idea of the workflow.
To start working on the DPP, you need to familiarise yourself with the main aspects to be described in the plan, as well as selecting the platform to fill it in and making sure it is in line with the requirements of the funders.
