On February 10\u201311, 2026, one of the most important European-level conferences dedicated to the development of data spaces, data management, and secure, reliable data exchange between research, industry, and the public sector \u2013 Data Spaces Symposium 2026<\/a> \u2013 took place in Madrid, Spain.<\/p>\n

The conference was organised by the Data Spaces Support Centre (DSSC<\/a>) in collaboration with Gaia-X<\/a>, the International Data Spaces Association (IDSA<\/a>) and the Big Data Value Association (BDVA<\/a>). It was attended by representatives of the European Commission, national data initiative coordinators, research institutions, universities, as well as companies from various sectors, with the number of attendees reaching one thousand.<\/p>\n

The event programme presented real-world, field-tested examples of data space implementations, emphasising the transition from pilot projects to large-scale scaling. Special attention was paid to how data spaces are used as a basis for providing reliable and high-quality data for artificial intelligence (AI) solutions, developing digital twins in products and processes, cross-sector collaboration and data reuse, as well as creating transparent and sustainable supply chains.<\/p>\n

The discussions highlighted the importance of semantic interoperability, including the use of common terminology, data models and metadata to make data understandable and usable across organisations and countries. Data quality aspects (accuracy, provenance, timeliness) and legal issues related to data access and data management within the European framework were also addressed.<\/p>\n

A significant part of the conference was dedicated to the experience of traditional industries, proving that data spaces are being successfully implemented not only in high-tech sectors but also in manufacturing, logistics, textiles, agriculture and the cultural sector. These examples showed that data sharing in industry is already delivering measurable benefits \u2013 higher efficiency, greater transparency and new economic value.<\/p>\n

The conclusions drawn during the event are also particularly important for the academic environment, as they demonstrate that research data, models, and scientific ideas can become a significant source of innovation for industry if they are structured, documented, and shared using data space principles.<\/p>\n

Participation in the conference provided valuable insights into how Latvian researchers, scientists, and data stewards can be more actively involved in European data space initiatives, promoting a culture of data sharing, cooperation with industry partners, and Latvia’s integration into the common European data ecosystem.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
